Thesis:

This essay provides a brief summarization of why I believe that human morality can only be obtained from a divine source (i.e., God); examine and critique the reasons why murder can sometime be considered an act of morality and/or immorality based upon an individual’s misconception of where their personal morality originates; and then conclude my research by suggesting that individuals of various faith-backgrounds, as well as those who adhere to an atheistic ideology, can never fully resolve and/or come to an absolute agreement upon acts considered to be moral or immoral.

Annotated Bibliography

Rose, Matthew. Ethics with Barth: God, Metaphysics and Morals. Italicize book titles. Farnham, Surrey, GBR: Ashgate Publishing Group, ,2010. ProQuest ebrary. Web. 29 November 2015.

Barth sees the Christian life as guided by reason and nature, an interpretation that finds Barth in conversation with ancient and medieval ethical theories about the nature of human happiness. Why are you citing Rose and discussing Barth? If Barth is your source go directly to his primary work. He believes that it is a skill only achieved through experience. So in relation to God, his word is the instructions on moral behavior and how to conduct yourself. With practicing this, you become better at the skill. Indent annotations.

May, Hope. Continuum Studies in Ancient Philosophy: Aristotle’s Ethics: Moral Development and Human Nature. London, GBR: Continuum International Publishing, 2010. ProQuest ebrary. Web. 29 November 2015.

Aristotle talks about the soul and how its condition effects the actions that one takes. This is good because I believe whatever is in the soul transcends from God or lack thereof. Is this Aristotle’s view?

Rossano, Matt J. “The Moral Faculty: Does Religion Promote “Moral Expertise”? International Journal for The Psychology of Religion18.3 (2008): 169-194- Academic Search Premier. Web. 29 Nov. 2015

This article talks about morality and how it is a skill that can be cultivated. It talks about how it requires practice and this practice is present in the moral teachings, activities, and rituals of the world’s religious traditions. This shows that all religions teach some sort of morality, but morality in itself is transcendent because it comes from God.

“Killing is both Religiously and Ethically Immoral.” The New Times Apr 12 2015ProQuest. 29 Nov. 2015.

This article will assist me in explaining why killing is religiously and ethically immoral. It has Biblical verses in it and explains God’s commandments. It also shows that morals are circumstantially based on religion, which makes moral disagreements hard to resolve.
